According to a media statement issued by the Chairperson of the Information Regulator, Advocate Pansy Tlakula, the Information Regulator’s office held its inaugural meeting on 1 December 2016 at Salu Building in Pretoria. During the meeting the following responsibilities were allocated to the full-time members:
- Adv Collen Weapond has been designated as the full-time member responsible for the Protection of Personal Information Act 2013 (POPI); and
- Adv Lebogang Stroom-Nzama has been designated as the full-time member responsible for the Promotion of Access to Information Act 2000 (PAIA).
The statement mentions that the reason why POPI has only been partially operational since April 2014 is that the remaining provisions, namely Chapters 1 to 4 as well as 6 to 12, can only be properly implemented after the Regulator has been established and reached a stage of operational readiness. The statement does not say when the Regulator will be operationally ready nor when the long-awaited and necessary regulations will be published.
The Office of the Information Regulator will serve a variety of functions including monitoring compliance of PAIA and POPI, handling complaints by data subjects and assisting in the development and application of codes of conduct.
